Hi, I'm Dog Bax and I've been paw crafting leather items since 2016. I started with simple items to learn and perfect my stitching by hand, learning various types of stitches but found that my favourites are blanket stitch and saddle stitch.
As you can see below blanket stitch is used along the edge of the straps to both protect and decorate the leather. Also the rainbow thread adds to the decorative impact of the stitching.
Also shown above is the saddle stitch, while it's primarily a stitch providing a very strong joint (or seam) it can also be decorative at the same time with alternating stitch colours. The saddle stitch is performed with two needles, pulling the same loop of thread through the leather crossing from side to side at each hole. This results in the thread holding both sides of the leather at each point along the seam.
Recent Work
I have made a diverse range of items, including place mats and coasters, cases for various items (hearing aids, tablets, medication, phones, wallets etc), puppy and pony wallets, cuffs, collars and my favourite the dog/pup mask!
Ra with Collars
Wallets
Anubis with his ears
Parts of Dog Lone dyed and ready for assembly
I have used pre-dyed light weight leather for items such as aprons. However most of my products start life as plain veg tanned leather, which is a milky coffee colour in its raw form.
This varies in weight and thickness according to the project it's intended for. The 2/3oz being suitable for wallets, 4/5oz for most cases and the 6/7oz for the masks or similar items. Much heavier weights are available if required for projects like leather armour.
Once the leather is cut the leather is dyed and finished ready for assembly.
